TV on the Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain permalink

Official rating: 93 + 3 reshuffle points = 96

This album is apparently just some form of a leak at the moment, but as it stands, it’s my favorite of the short year so far, and probably will be for a while. The whole album is a clusterf*ck of indie power jams, like Arcade Fire from the hood. It’s dense, tense, fast, sassed, slick, tricked, and lots of other words. Ahhh, if another version of this album comes out, my brain asplode.

  1. Yeah, I really like it too. I still think a few songs (Wolf Like Me, Dirty Whirlwind, Snakes & Martyrs) could use a little more texture, driving force, and mixing, which who knows, they might get. Still, definitely one of the best of the year. Playhouses rocks my world.

  2. yeah, S&M and DW are my least favorite tracks only for those mixing reasons. Definitely seems like they can do more with them.

Hm, looks like a new version is out now. On Oink anyway.

We’ve got a new tracklist on our hands, but all the songs sound the same.

  4. Rumor has it that the 2nd version (tracklist above) isn’t the final, and some mixing still indeed has to be done.

Kinda skeptical myself, but hey, if it keeps getting better, why not?

  9. I have a version with different sequencing and the song “Blues from down here” instead of “Hours.” Coincidentally, “blues” doesn’t work. Anybody what the deal is with that?

  11. Oh this album is just amazing. Ok Calculator is still my favourite, but “Tonight” is such a lovely, lovely tune.
“Wolf Like Me” and “I Was a Lover” are up there too. This album is going to be amazing live.
