Rogue Wave’s bill was looking good on paper till death crept in. They still got a decent amount of mileage out of their headliners though. The Bon Savants are mod-pop subway farmers who recline in their ’50s barcalounger while listening to the Smiths. Basically, throwbacks to a few years ago. The singer often drowns himself in his own voice, but their melodies are passable lifesavers. They’re worthy of more serious comparisons, but other people know this band better than I. Do.
As for Mazarin, the lead guitarist’s best friend killt himself recently, so some dude and later, a band, filled in for them on short notice. Amateur night. Mazarin, come back.

Finally, Rogue Wave came out and set themselves up, which is fine cause they wouldn’t have gotten much of an explosive welcome from the shanty town crowd if they came out just whenever. They opened with “Bird on a Wire”, which inexplicably lacked the halting guitar slide scattered in the verse. I kinda wanted to smack someone for that.
They continued on with a couple older tracks, including “Sewn Up”, which is my fave off of Out of the Shadows. “Publish My Love” kept their pimp-hand strong, “Are You on My Side” whirlpooled, and “You” made all girls who were there b/c of the OC feel a little better. I was kinda surprised by their short, but sweet, shot of “Medicine Ball”.
In there somewhere was Nirvana’s “On a Plain”, which is one of the most inventive rock covers I’ve heard in a while. They didn’t bother with the Buddy Holly “Everyday” cover, which has been in my phone for way too long now.
For the encore, ol’ Roguenstein busted out a solo song that, according to him, got rejected by a soundtrack. It was decent, pshh. Then the band finished with “Love’s Lost Guarantee”, which as far as I’m concerned, was the perfect way to end the show. It blasted, rocked, sailed, soared, and left me with a very satisfied grin. All in all, they could stand to turn up the vocals a bit and hope for a bigger venue, but despite that, put on a pretty compelling show.
