My, My, My Morning Jacket permalink

the jacket attackethDespite seeing them live twice before, I’ve basically ignored tha Jacket, mostly because I couldn’t stand to disturb the image in my mind of waterfall hair flowing.

But now that Z is possibly my favorite album of the year, and I’ve revisted a bunch of EPs and whatnot, they’re pretty high on my radar. Plus, I’ll be seeing them on Saturday. I’m about as psyched for this show as any this fall or year for that matter.

My Lexingtonian cuzz Johan will attest that blasting MMJ out of a Jaguar at the beach is one of the most pleasurable activites out there.

Z is #1 on Metacritic at the moment

And yes, it helps that we’re all from Kentucky. Natch.

Long Weekend in Tulsa (and Detroit??) permalink

Well, it all started off with a mechanical problem on my NorthWORST Airlines flight from Boston on Thursday. (The strike is no problem??) We were massively delayed, so I missed my only chance to get to Tulsa. They shacked me and some others up at the shady Best Western near the airport. After barely surviving that night, I had to get on a 6 AM flight to Memphis instead of direct to Tulsa. Of course, my Memphis flight to Tulsa had mechanical problems too.

Once I got settled into T-Town, we went to Jenks for dinner @ Los Cabos. I had the seafood ‘dillas. Pretty tasty. Great place. But then the breeze blew in and it was so cold, we just drove by the game instead of going in. Great atmosphere though. Also, WTF is up with turning our tennis courts into parking lots?! Then we went out.

The next night, we went to the Tulsa State Fair. First off, we managed to sneak in for free. While we were there, we saw the 2 “World’s Smallest Horses” and a bunch more “freaks”, such as an albino turtle and two-nosed cow, etc. Also, rode the skyride, did the petting zoo, and watched fireworks. At the fair, they had fried vegetables, fried cheesecake, fried twinkies, fried oreos, and fried just-about-everything-else. Tons o’ fun.

Some pretty awesome pictures here

Then we went out again. Ultimately, I took the brunt of games of @$$hole and Drunk Driver.

We also played tennis, went shopping, watched good shows, saw old Jenks people, went out to dinners (incl. Shogun). Definitely the best Columbus Day weekend I’ve ever had.

Plus, one of my flights home was delayed b/c of, yep, mechanical problems, so I wrote Northworst a scathing letter. Hopefully they’ll give me something like a free plane.

Whew.

Pakistan earthquake toll: 81,000 - still counting

big pile of crapistanThey’re comparing it to the tsunami. Between that, the wars, and now this quake, could real estate value in that region be any lower? I was watching Lehrer’s show last night and a reporter was in Mustafabad or something, and there were 100’s of collapsed buildings, and one single relief truck. Screw hope at this point.

This quake pretty much set the area back 1,000 years, putting them at roughly 10,000 B.C. now.

New Hampshire declared state of emergency

New Hampshire is the new New Orleans. Look for police beatings to increase in the Granite State.

Laura Bush weighs in on Harriet Miers

After about 6 years of Dubya’s presidency, you would think that the First Lady would realize that no one gives a flying crap about what she has to think. In the latest installment, the former elementary school teacher claims that sexism, not radical underqualification or cronyism, is fueling criticism of Miers. Laura, Laura, Laura. Please, please stop talking.

Web enjoys year of biggest growth

Apparently, a record number of new web sites were started, which assuredly include a bunch of now-dead blogs, tons of porn sites, and the various permutations of ytmnd.com
